Hunters Point Family
San Francisco is one of the most affluent cities in the United States. Yet, residents of the Bayview Hunters Point community – located in the southeast sector of the City – live a harsh reality of poverty, rampant drug abuse, and overwhelming violence.
The Hunters Point Family (HPF) is a grass-roots, community-based, youth development agency providing social, educational, and recreational programs to local youth and their families living in the primarily African American Bayview Hunters Point community. The agency serves over 200 youth (ages 10-22) each year.
GIVE, in partnership with the San Francisco Rotary Club Golden Gate and San Francisco Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center, is helping HPF develop programs that foster entrepreneurship and business skills among at-risk youth in the Hunters Point community. Our initiatives include:
Urban Farms/Farmer’s Market Program
This program serves as an “entrepreneurship laboratory” for youth. Participants grow organic vegetables and distribute organic produce to families in the community and a local Farmers Market.
The program promotes healthy eating within the Hunters Point community, and teaches youth a sense of responsibility and hands-on business skills.
In addition to fostering essential business skills, including the ability to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, create a sound business plan, launch their own small businesses, and thereby improve the economy of their local communities.
In partnership with HPF, we are seeking to:
- Integrate entrepreneurship learning curricula into HPF programs to foster entrepreneurship skills
- Improve the lives of participants, their families and the community
- Offer volunteer mentoring and support services to HPF programs
- Foster connections between the program and local businesses
